Optical Machine Authentication - New approaches to enhance document inspection at automatic borders using specially designed KINEGRAM devices

To cope with the ever-increasing number of travellers without compromising security, Automatic Border Control Systems (ABC) must be capable of efficient and reliable inspection of biometric machine-readable travel documents (or e-MRTDs).
These systems rely on the Public-Key-Infrastructure (PKI) to establish the full chain-of-trust. This, however, is not only dependent on the electronic functionality, but also on the timely exchange and revocation of PKI certificates between countries. As these requirements are not always met, it is not surprising that the ICAO New Technologies Working Group has recently issued best practice guidelines for reliable machine authentication, which includes electronic and physical security check routines on the e-MRTDs.

Travel documents usually contain strong anti-counterfeiting physical security features, such as DOVIDS like the KINEGRAM. To maintain their ability to resist copying and simulation, these security features, which are traditionally designed for human inspection, exhibit optical effects with ever-increasing complexity. Thus, their authentication at automatic border crossings using standardized equipment and processes is both a significant technological challenge and a huge opportunity for enhancing the security.
During his presentation at this year’s ConnectID conference in Washington D.C., John Peters - Manager of New Business Development at OVD Kinegram -  showed how the KINEGRAM  - a visually brilliant Level 1 security feature -  can also become an integral part of the machine verification process at our borders.
