Highly Secure Secondary Images for Passports and ID Cards with KINEGRAM PHOTOGRAPH

KINEGRAM PHOTOGRAPH is an innovative solution to shield the secondary portrait of a passport or any other identity document against manipulation attacks. Additional personalization options turn secondary portraits into highly secure features in their own right.

Protecting the secondary portraits within identity documents is a very important, yet often neglected aspect of ID document security. Used as an additional reference for facial comparisons between a document and the person presenting it for inspection, secondary portraits are often poorly protected. This, together with their rather small size, increases the danger of fraudulent attacks, for example through photo substitution or photo manipulation by an attack from the front or back of the document.

With KINEGRAM PHOTOGRAPH, we offer a highly secure solution that will protect secondary portraits against such attacks.

Secondary Passport and ID Card Portraits Need Protection

In recent years, secondary images have become an established additional feature in passports, identity cards, driver’s licenses and other ID Documents. They are aimed at increasing the overall security of these documents (case in point: the current Austrian passport, containing a total of eight images of the holder), and offer further reference points for facial comparison.

However, secondary images with no inherent security are prone to criminal attacks, a danger only reinforced by their often fairly small size and lower resolution. The KINEGRAM PHOTOGRAPH solution has been designed to add much-needed security to secondary portraits. The technology allows the creation of a personalized KINEGRAM photo element, i.e., of a unique, highly secure secondary image as integral part of an embedded KINEGRAM feature.

How KINEGRAM PHOTOGRAPH Protects Secondary Images in Passports and ID Cards

The new KINEGRAM PHOTOGRAPH technology enables highly secure, reasonably-sized, high-resolution secondary portraits of document holders. The solution is based on an embedded KINEGRAM Patch consisting of two metal layers, created simultaneously with the document personalization: Laser-ablating one layer of the KINEGRAM Patch during the document personalization creates an individual and highly secure portrait image.

Due to the two layers, a KINEGRAM PHOTOGRAPH secondary portrait can exhibit eye-catching optical security effects from the KINEGRAM portfolio. In addition, it can be equipped with further motifs, for example national symbols, or personalized information such as the document number or the date of expiry.

KINEGRAM PHOTOGRAPH is a new development that has been designed to be highly useful for document issuers. With this solution, issuers can create clearly recognizable, securely protected secondary images, while making efficient use of the standard laser personalization of their documents. The solution doubles effectiveness and security against counterfeiting and manipulation.
