Metallization
KINEGRAM elements for protecting identity documents can be fully transparent (HRI) or partially metallized. Transparent KINEGRAM elements are a classic and highly effective way to protect the portrait and personalized data of an identity document. They are proven billion times over in documents around the world and offer
- Full visibility of the personalization
- High resilience and brilliance
- Compatibility with all standard document manufacturing and personalization processes
Increasingly, governments and issuing authorities opt for partially metallized KINEGRAM elements to protect their passports, national ID cards and other identity documents. Partially metallized KINEGRAM features are rapidly becoming the state-of-the-art authentication device for government documents. Extremely brilliant and very easy to apply, they are used in hundreds of documents around the globe. Partially metallized KINEGRAM elements offer
- Trusted Security – well-known and highly reliable authentication device
- Ease of use thanks to exceptional brilliance and visibility
- High versatility and additional design options – the metallized areas can take virtually any shape and outline
- Robust security against cut-and-paste-forgeries
OVD Kinegram has pioneered several innovations in terms of partial metallization:
KINEGRAM ZERO.ZERO Metallization
ID protection with KINEGRAM ZERO.ZERO - the unique metallization solution for best-in-class security and visual attractiveness.
KINEGRAM ZERO.ZERO is the brand name of the unique metallization technology developed and produced by OVD Kinegram AG. In a passport security foil with this technology, diffractive design elements – for example fine lines displaying movement effects - are in perfect register to the metallization. In other words, the metallization perfectly and sharply matches the visual security effects of the feature. This cannot be achieved by commercially available metallization processes for hologram foil.
Thanks to the high-resolution metallization technology, KINEGRAM DOVID elements can be integrated more easily into the security printing. This enables the document designer to achieve higher levels in document security. In addition, the diffractive and metallized motives of the KINEGRAM ZERO.ZERO feature appear much brighter than conventional transparent (HRI) products.
- One-of-a-kind design and security thanks to high-precision partial metallization
- Maximum effectiveness due to maximum brilliance
- Unlimited document and feature design – transparency in all the right places
- The ideal technology for a fully integrated security foil
KINEGRAM High Definition Metallization
Innovative technologies for passport security: KINEGRAM HDM is a new metallization technology with unsurpassed resolution of the metallic areas. Using line widths down to 10-15 microns, DOVID elements with sophisticated design patterns, fine-line elements, symbols, text or letters can be realized. This new high-resolution process can be used in Combi features as a higher-security alternative. Going far beyond the possibilities of standard DOVIDs, this unique technology opens up new horizons for protective foil elements.
- Unparalleled graphic design possibilities including greyscale or screened images
- Full range of metallized transparency from 5% to 95%
- Realization of unique 2nd – level security features, not attainable with other protective foil elements
- Suitable for upgrades from conventional metallization to high resolution metallization

Combination Features
Whereas KINEGRAM features can be manufactured using a variety of standalone foil technologies, enabling for example the incorporation of multiple colors or specific techniques for partial metallization, the KINEGRAM technology also allows for a combination of disparate foil technologies in one single feature.
Typically, the resulting so-called “combination technologies” or “combination features” combine transparency and metallization. Combination features possess a higher technical complexity and consequently, a higher level of security:
Not only can they protect the entire surface of an identity document, they also build strong barriers against counterfeiting. Criminals neither have access to the individual techniques required to create the different elements of a combination feature, nor can they achieve an imitation of the visual appearance of such a feature by recurring to conventional counterfeiting technologies.
KINEGRAM combination features are an ideal solution for upgrading existing KINEGRAM security foil features to achieve an enhanced level of document security.
- The perfect combination of portrait protection and intuitive authentication
- Design integration with nearly no limits
- Unsurpassed barrier to counterfeiting
- Revolutionizing personalization: option to link laser personalized data with metallization
One example of a KINEGRAM combination technology is KINEGRAM HDM Combi (High Definition Metallization), which utilizes a highly defined intricate partial metallization, 8-10 times higher in resolution than those achieved using commercially available partial metallization technologies used by counterfeiters. HDM enables the inclusion of variable shades of transparency, highly realistic images (e.g. for portraits), or the inclusion of grayscale or halftone-based motifs.
Another combination technology is the KINEGRAM ZERO.ZERO Combi, often used for the protection of polycarbonate ID documents, both cards in ID-1 format as well as ID-3 format passport data pages. Similar to HDM Combi, this technology also provides especially strong portrait protection and supports easy visual authentication. It is characterized by a 100% alignment of partial metallization and optical structures, where the areas of metallization precisely correspond with the underlying visual effects.
A third example for combination technologies is KINEGRAM PRIME. This technology combines the KINEGRAM ZERO.ZERO metallization with an integrated design element that is composed of both metallized and color-printed structures – all within the same security feature. A further characteristic of KINEGRAM PRIME is that the metallic structures of the design element are in perfect register with the color print.

Color
KINEGRAM elements for identity documents can be enhanced with one or more printed colors thanks to the award-winning KINEGRAM COLORS technology. Within each multi-colored KINEGRAM feature, the colors are positioned in perfect register to the partial metallization, a characteristic that is virtually impossible for counterfeiters to achieve. This is an unique achievement and further increases the anti-counterfeiting resistance of the KINEGRAM feature.
The combination of individual diffractive effects with pronounced printed colors adds extra security to the document and facilitates easier verification: color adds visual interest to the document, drawing in the attention of the document examiner.
The technology lends itself particularly well to window features, where different colors can be used for front-to-back authentication of a document. The perfect register of color and partial metallization also adds more freedom to the feature design and can enhance the motif of the security element, as well as support its integration into the overall security print of the document.
